Decommissioning a Facility? An Electrical Equipment Checklist

Facility shutdowns, renovations, and relocations generate large volumes of electrical equipment. With a plan, you can recover significant value instead of paying to dispose of it. Use this checklist.

Before disconnection

• Inventory the gear while it is still installed and labeled. Note brands, catalog numbers, and ratings.
• Photograph nameplates before removal, when they are easy to access.
• Identify high-value items: transformers, switchgear lineups, large breakers, bus duct, MCCs.

During removal

• Keep related components together (e.g., MCC buckets with their structures).
• Protect labels and avoid damaging lugs and trip units.
• Palletize and group identical items.

Recovering value

• Get a single offer from a direct buyer for the whole lot rather than selling piecemeal.
• Confirm the buyer handles rigging and freight at no cost to you.
• Schedule pickup to align with your shutdown timeline.

What to do with the rest

Damaged or truly worthless items can be recycled. A good buyer will take the valuable equipment at resale value and can advise on the remainder.
