What Are Used Transformers Worth? Dry-Type and Distribution Value Guide

Used transformers retain meaningful value, but pricing them requires understanding a few key variables. Here is how the surplus market looks at transformers.

What drives transformer value

kVA rating. This is the single biggest factor. Larger transformers contain more copper and serve higher-value applications, so a 500 kVA unit is worth far more than a 15 kVA unit.

Type. Dry-type, cast-resin, and liquid-filled transformers each have different markets. Dry-type distribution transformers are the most commonly traded.

Voltage configuration. Primary and secondary voltages determine which buyers can use the unit. Standard configurations move faster.

Condition and age. Functional units with readable nameplates and no core or winding damage bring the most. Cosmetic wear matters far less than electrical integrity.

Estimating value

Record the kVA, primary/secondary voltage, phase (single or three), type, and manufacturer from the nameplate, and photograph it. With that data a buyer can quote quickly. As a general guide, mid-size dry-type distribution transformers carry solid resale value, and larger units scale up from there.

A note on liquid-filled units

Liquid-filled transformers may involve oil handling and environmental considerations. A buyer who handles these regularly can manage the logistics and compliance — make sure you disclose the fluid type.
